1. Study-trip to Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany
From Wassenaar the trip headed to the Meyer Werft, a well-known shipyard. This famous builder of passenger and cruise ships is located in Papenburg. It has supplied mega-ships to international cruise liners such as the AIDA Cruisers, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Star Cruises, P&O Cruises, Royal Cruise Line, and Holland America Line. Besides it built ferries, research vessels, river cruise liners, gas tankers, container ships, and livestock carriers. Indonesia also purchased a lot of ships from the shipyard. In 2008 a passenger ship was delivered to the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, Jakarta. It was christened as Gunung Dempo and was the 24th passenger ship built for the country.
At the shipyard, SIN Wassenaar’s delegates were divided into two groups to join the site visit. The journey inside the manufacture set out from the history of the company, the progress and its achievements. In the home theatre we were presented with clips of the company’s path from its foundation in 1795 to the 21st century. At the display section the kids were very enthusiastic to witness the scaled-model of huge ships ever built by the shipyard. At more interesting moment was the ‘company-at-work’ section where the blocks of ship modules being assembled. This section also showed how the production line of a hyper-modern shipbuilding looked like. It was a very valuable juncture of field-learning at Papenburg.
