NEMO Museum Amsterdam – Planned as an academic component, students of SIN Wassenaar’s Primary School took part in a contextual learning programme at the NEMO Science Museum, Amsterdam, 24 November 2011. Setting out in the relatively chilly autumn morning from The Hague Central Railways Station the group took an intercity to Amsterdam Central Railway Station, and then continued the trip to the museum by bus.
The all nine regular students were supervised and guided by three teachers: Bu Dessy, Bu Yayu, and Pak Gun, and specially assisted by Bu Yenni Ramon Mohandas.
At the museum the children in groups explored, discovered and tried various science themes, at the sections of Phenomena, chained reactions, and Codename: DNA. Interspaced with a lunch break, the learning continued with watching DNA movie at the 3D Theatre, krachtpatsers, water power, water kingdom, techno-lab and the balls factory.
During this inquiry approach to learning, the children learned contextually, explored and experimented, before drawing conclusions and followed by reinforcement by the teachers. A compilation of students report on their experience is expected to be eventually submitted to the school.
In the afternoon they left the museum, walked to the Amsterdam Central Railway Station taking a straight intercity back to The Hague. It was a great day of contextual learning for the young learners!
