For the people who don’t now what Feyenoord Rotterdam is, Feyenoord is a famous soccer club from Rotterdam. Rotterdam is the largest harbour city in Zuid-Holland and the world.
In 1921 Feyenoord was still an amateur club while other clubs like Arsenal were already professional clubs. Back in 1937 there was a match between Feyenoord and Arsenal. In the first game Feyenoord lost from Arsenal but then Feyenoord took revenge and won from Arsenal with 1-0. About 51.000 people were watching that game. The goal-maker was Manus Vrauwdant and from that moment the success began by Feyenoord.
Because Feyenoord won many times against different clubs in the Netherlands, most people began to like Feyenoord, and then it got a stadium. The first match that was hold in the new stadium of Feyenoord was Feyenoord-Beerschot in 1956, and it ended with 5-2 for Feyenoord. The success of Feyenoord was growing and so past by years. The supporters of Feyenoord were growing to, so the stadium had to become bigger. Almost 50.000 people can fit in the stadium of Feyenoord now and that is a lot.
There are also memorable matches like once Feyenoord won from a German club with 11-4 back in 1956 and so the success of Feyenoord was growing and became a top club. Even Feyenoord was the national champion for many times, once won the Champions League and several times won the UEFA CUP.
And where there is a top club, there is also a rival top club. Feyenoord has a rival and that is Ajax, the club from Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands. It was always a race between Ajax and Feyenoord, which the best club was. Sometimes Ajax won from Feyenoord, and sometimes it defeated Ajax. Back in the 60’s, almost every time Feyenoord won from Ajax. Feyenoord hammered Ajax with 7-3, 9-5, and the final score 9-4. Ajax supporters claimed that their keeper was wearing wrong contact lenses. It was rubbish of course but that was only gossip so not real.
Ajax has even bigger stadium that can fit 51.000 people. It is called Arena. Meanwhile, Feyenoord’s stadium is called De Kuip. Next to these two stadiums there are two cinemas: Pathe Arena and Pathe De Kuip.
Feyenoord had many star players like Ruud Gullit, Wim Jansen, and Johan Cruijff. Johan Cruijff played in Feyenoord and wanted to show anyone that he could make a club the national champion, and he did. He brought Feyenoord as the League and Cup’s champions in 1984. Now Feyenoord is not very good anymore but it still has fantastic players who are also the top scorers of the Dutch Premier League (Eredivisie): Dirk Kuijt and Salomon Kalou.
